Accident prevention by improving driving skill with sensors!

Unless the number of traffic accident is reduced, it is difficult to cut down on traffic accident fatalities. Wide usage of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) would be effective on preventing accidents. However, more accidents would be prevented if driver’s skill improves. This is what ATR, Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories, Dr. Noma (Senior researcher) and Dr. Tada (Researcher) is working on. To enhance driver’s awareness of safe driving, by use of electronics, driver’s skill is quantitatively assessed and those results are fed back to the driver. Driver’s behavior when driving normally is quantified. The driver’s behavior includes the angle of driver’s neck and time required when checking both sides, the speed of making a turn and timing of pressing the accelerator/brake pedal. By quantifying the behavior, it is possible to find the driver’s habits and clarify the difference from the ideal way of driving. The aim is to reduce the chance of accidents by making drivers realize the results of objective assessment. This measurement system “Objet” is commercially available and jointly-developed in 2008 by ATR and Yamashiro driving school based on basic research conducted by ATR. With a view to expand application of Objet system, ATR held a symposium on October 28th, 2008. Now, ATR is seeking a way to increase usage of this system by ordinary drivers.
